Timeline Evolution of DTS and IT

DTS has grown along with the development of society.
Here we chronicle the growth of DTS over the past 50 years along with the progress in the computer and IT industries.

In order to make the history of DTS easier to understand, the chronological list is shown according to time periods since our foundation. This may cause some discrepancies between the items shown in the decades of the menu.

1983-1994Amidst the IT wave

Further strengthened management structure amid rise of computers and robust system demand

Head Office Building(No.01)

The price/performance ratio of personal computers improved drastically in the 1980s, and they gradually became recognized as business devices. Meanwhile, companies called for office automation (OA: automation of offices and offices), and demand for systems increased in response to various deregulations and liberalization (interest rates, insurance premiums, and airline rates, etc.), including the third online shift of the banking system, as well as support for responding to the change of the Japanese era name to Heisei. In order to meet this strong demand, we  also increased our workforce, and focused on standardizing operations on employee training. We further strengthened the management structure with the establishment of the company mission statement, the launch of the “Council to Think about the Company’s Future,” a strategic planning body led by senior management, and the relocation of our head office building.

    1983

Launched “Council to Think about the Company’s Future”

The “Council to Think about the Company’s Future” was formed in 1983, mainly led by senior management.
We have continued our efforts while making changes, such as introducing a proposal system and changing it to a structure centered more on young employees.
As the sales volume and organization expanded, we sought to develop our own business in order to stabilize operations.

Establishment of the company mission statement

We established our company mission statement in 1983.
At that time, our company’s mission statements were “to secure customer trust through technology,” “to improve the lives of employees through technology,” and “to contribute to society through technology.” This formed the basis of the DTS Group’s current philosophy. Other slogans such as “First at work, and first at play” were also created and spread among employees.

  • 1984

Acquired 6-story head office (company-owned building) building in Shimbashi 5-chome, Minato-ku

  • 1985

Telecommunications business grows rapidly due to liberalization

Development business that started in telecommunications, financial institutions, and manufacturing industries expanded into the distribution, education, and air transportation industries. As companies continued the systemization of their operations, we developed systems in a wide range of fields. In addition, we continued to grow by undertaking business for the new telecommunications carriers that arose with the liberalization of telecommunications in 1985.

  • 1987

Further expansion of team and establishment of structure and infrastructure

We  celebrated our 15th anniversary in 1987 with more than 500 employees. Consequently, we have worked on developing and enhancing the internal regulations and training programs as well as standardizing documents such as manuals and specifications. Also, we have established a Standardization Committee and a Technical Committee in order to improve quality, and a BiRD Committee to create business manuals and conduct workshops specific to the financial industry.
As business expanded, we opened the Kyushu Branch Office in 1990 and the Kansai Branch Office in 1991. In addition, we opened Development Centers and other facilities in Chiyoda City, Shinagawa City, Meguro City, and Kawasaki City.

  • 1990

Registered and certified as a SI service company

In 1987, with an increasing number of employees, we formed an Internal Regulations Preparation Committee to strengthen our internal organization, and we started preparations for going public.
Moreover, in 1990, we were certified as a system integration service company by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (currently the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry).

    Over-the-counter stock offering

Growing sales and over-the-counter public offering

Our sales exceeded 1.3 billion yen in 1983. It was sales targets such as “Challenge 13” and “Challenge 14” that became the banner for future expansion.
In 1990, the share capital increased to 731.78 million yen, and in 1991 we were registered with the Japan Securities Dealers Association as an over-the-counter stock, with a share capital of 1,823 million yen.

This is what happened in the 1980s

The financial industry underwent the third online shift. With increasing business processing volumes and expanding services, systems also continued to become more advanced. Under these circumstances, preparations were made for future IT innovations by building a new system with flexibility and scalability during the third online shift. In addition, the introduction of business systems, networking, and office automation at workplaces in various industries progressed, and the introduction of office automation equipment was accelerated.

  • Computers

This is what happened in the 1980s

Around the mid-1980s, mainframes that had been used as business systems suffered from increased loads due to centralized processing. As a result, instead of mainframes, which were costly to upgrade, there was an increasing shift to low-cost, highly performance-improved “open” systems. In the field of networks, a new telecommunications carrier called Shindenden (NCC) emerged due to the liberalization of telecommunications. The environment for data communication services progressed, and ISDN also appeared. Overseas, the world’s first commercial Internet provider was established in the United States in 1989.

The C language appeared in the 1970s, and C++ and Objective-C, which incorporated object orientation, appeared in the 1980s. Objective-C is still used as one of the languages to develop iOS applications. In addition, Perl, an open-source scripting language, appeared and is still used today mainly for web servers. Then, Python appeared in the 1990s. It is currently used in development work particularly in AI and big data analysis. In 1994, PHP was created based on the C language. It is used as a scripting language for web servers.
